Mary Elizabeth Olson was born and raised in Lawrence, Kansas. She grew up on a ranch where her parents raised beef cattle. She well remembers using horses to farm their hay crops. Mary moved to Noxon, Montana in 1972 with her late husband Dick. An active member of the saddle club since the early 1980’s, Mary is now 87 years young.
Mary served as treasurer of the club for many years and held many potlucks in her home fixing her famous “leg of lamb” for the entrée.
Mary was the treasurer during the first part of the transition the club made from their arena at the Noxon Park to our present arena on Government Mountain Road, in fact she was involved in the building of all three arenas and the buildings that we used over the years. She was always willing to help work and when she couldn’t do the work herself, she would hire a boy or two to do the work.
Our arena was located at the present Pilgrim Creek Park from 1974 until about 2004, so her resignation was a few years before the new arena was opened for use, however, Mary was the Grand Marshall at our “opening ceremonies”. We usually referred to Mary as our “legalese” since she was very intelligent and wise about these things and helped us out many a time. Mary remains a member of the club to this day.
Mary was also very active in the County 4-H programs; both in sewing, and in horsemanship. She loaned her horse, Smokey to children that did not have a horse to ride and take care of.
Mary owned two horses during this time; Bart and Smoky; both of which have since left the planet. She has also owned several dogs and cats, so animals have been a big part of her life, both as a child and an adult.
We are very proud to have Mary as our friend and a member of our club. Thanks Mary!
